Question/Description

Theme of Discussion:

Leadership in accordance with followership style/follower's behavior”





Scenario:



You
work for a large company, in an office with over 200 people. You have
been assigned a very important project as a team leader to be completed
within 6 days (a week) so your team must work well together to meet
this deadline Your Team consists of total ten people.




Three
of the ten people that have been placed on your team are people you
have never worked with before. Even though you are responsible for this
project, the other team members have the same job title as you (they
are your peers- you are not their boss).




One of those three members, “Usman” is a person whodoes
not participate in discussions; goes along with whatever is happening;
adds nothing new to the group; is bossed around by other group members,
even if this doesn’t help the group.




The other member “Zain” is skillful
and capable but at the same time he is very difficult, bothersome,
sarcastic and pessimistic. He is very self centered and does not
perform as a team member.




The
third member “Wajid” is very experienced, adept at the surviving, acts
according to the system or the act of laws however; he is risk averse
and prone to cover his tracks and he is not very enthusiastic. He
actually believes that “better to be safe than sorry.




Question for Discussion:



Identify
the kind of followers they are and discuss the way you would deal with
each one of these challenging personalities to achieve your
target/objective as a team.




Note:
You must keep in mind the following points while providing your
comments on dealing with the above mentioned ‘challenging’
personalities on your team.


· These are the co-workers that you have not worked with before.

· You are not these persons’ boss.

· You may have to work on their team some time soon.

· These persons might be jealous that you were picked as leader.

· These persons might have been hired before you.

· You have lots to do and only six days to get it done.

· You are responsible for how well the final project goes.

· These persons might respond you with a personal attack or denial

· These persons might not change and his behavior continues.

In the above scenario “Usman” is
the Alienated follower style, “Zain” is the Conventional follower
style & “Wajid ” is Pragmatic follower styles.







To cope the above mentioned
problem following steps are helpful to built the exemplary followers:





Encourage and enhance
dialogue:
A leader should encourage
the followers to keep the communication channels open and enhance the dialogue
for batter group decision and better working environment.





Seek to enhance their skill
sets:
Leader provides the chance to
enhance their skills through training. Training and development is continue
process and leader always try to enhance sill sets of their employees.








Keep their Confidences: Leader should take the followers in
confidence for taking any decision so that they feel themselves more confident.
The should be encouraged to take risks.





Organizational Structures that
Encourage Follower ship:

Establishing leaderless groups, where all members assume equal
responsibility for achieving goals.
